Ethiopian Capital Market Administrative Tribunal conducts awareness-raising forum for Gambella regional

Ethiopian Capital Market Administrative Tribunal (ECMAT) conducts awareness-raising forum for Gambella regional justice sector professionals and officials.

ECMAT today December 5 organized an extensive awareness-raising forum in Gambella city for judges, prosecutors, and senior leaders from key judicial and governance institutions of the Gambella Regional State.

Participants included representatives from the Gambella Regional Supreme Court, the Justice Bureau, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the Police Commission, and higher officials from the Office of the president, Plan bureau , investment bureau , finance bureau , Trade and industry bureau.

On his opening remark, ECMATChairperson Abenet Zerefu, said that ECMAT operates independently from the regular court system, with a distinct mandate to review and decide appeals arising from decisions issued by the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority and a person who exercise the power and duties of the authority regarding market transactions.
He highlighted that, under Article 65 of the Proclamation, ECMAT has full authority to review and overturn decisions made by the Authority, guaranteeing investors and market participants a reliable mechanism for justice.

He also added the importance of equipping judicial actors with a clear understanding of the regulatory framework is essential to safeguard the credibility, transparency, and efficiency of the capital market system.

The forum aimed at ensuring effective collaboration in the enforcement of capital market laws.

The Chairperson emphasized that the session is part of a wider effort to enhance inter-institutional cooperation. He reaffirmed the ECMAT commitment to working closely with judicial bodies in the Gambella Region to ensure effective implementation of capital market laws and smooth execution of future legal proceedings.

In his opening remarks, the President of the Supreme Court of Gambella Regional State, James Deng, who presided over the awareness forum as guest of honor, hailed the initiative as a critical step in advancing Ethiopia’s emerging capital market system. He stressed that, because the capital market is a new and transformative concept for the country, building shared understanding and exchanging experiences is essential to prepare regions like Gambella for meaningful participation in future national reforms.

The President affirmed that the Gambella Supreme Court stands fully committed to collaborating with ECMAT and will actively support any future initiatives undertaken in the region. He emphasized that this partnership will play a vital role in strengthening institutional capacity, enhancing legal certainty, and contributing to the region’s socio-economic development.
